Levels of Care
The Buffalo Osteoporosis Institute partners with referring physicians at their direction to help deliver the best possible outcomes for patients. Our goal is to offer levels of patient care that allow you to retain as much control as you need while accessing specialized consultations for cases spread across a wide spectrum of disease states.
Level I – Bone Density and Vertebral Assessment. This is not your average DEXA scan. Our report also includes a vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) that helps to identify wedge fractures, as well as a FRAX score that measures the probability of a patient suffering a break due to osteoporosis within ten years. Our machines also scan a larger sample of the skeleton as compared to most others, giving us more data to consider and a more accurate assessment.
Level II – Bone Density and Vertebral Assessment with consultation. Practioners and patients that just need a second opinion will appreciate this option. This level of service includes a patient consultation with one of our practitioners, as well as our recommendation(s) for treatment if needed. Note that in severe cases our practitioners will consult with our medical director to insure that we give extra attention to the most challenging cases.
Level III – Bone Density and Vertebral Assessment, consultation, with diagnosis and prescription of therapy (when appropriate). For the most challenging cases we can provide a “turn-key” service without the need to fully transfer the patient to an outside practice. We will administer all of the necessary tests and consultations, and then diagnose and prescribe appropriate therapy for the patient, before finally reporting back to the referring physician.
