Preventing Osteoporosis

The average person’s bone mass density peaks while they are in their early 20s and natural bone “thinning” begins at about age 30. So it’s important to note that bone loss is a natural occurrence for adults that cannot be completely avoided. However, there are a number of things that you can do to maximize your bone health and reduce the risk of developing Osteoporosis:

  • Get a lot of exercise/physical activity and eat a nutritious diet rich in both calcium and vitamin D during your pre-teen and teen years to increase your bone mass while your skeleton is still developing.
  • Continue to exercise regularly and eat right throughout your adult life to maintain healthy bone. Weight-bearing activities like walking, jogging, weight lifting, and any that work the muscles against gravity are considered to be the best for this.
  • Control alcohol consumption to include two or less drinks a day if you are a man and one or less per day if you are a woman.
  • Avoid smoking tobacco.
