Risk Factors

You may be "at risk" of developing Osteoporosis and should be receiving regularly scheduled DEXA scans if you are a (or have a):

  • Woman age 50+.
  • Man age 65+.
  • Post-menopausal woman with one or more of the risk factors below.
  • Caucasian or Asian.
  • Experienced early menopause or late onset of menstrual periods.
  • History of bone fractures as an adult, or have a close relative with a history of adult bone fractures.
  • Regular tobacco user.
  • Vitamin D deficient.
  • Diet low in calcium.
  • Consume excessive amounts of alcohol or caffeine.
  • Low body weight or a “small-boned” (slender) body build.
  • Low levels of physical activity or a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Taking or have taken a medication that is known to cause bone loss (such as prednisone or phenytoin).
  • Low hormone levels.
  • Hyperparathyroidism or Hyperthyroidism.
