Risk Factors
You may be "at risk" of developing Osteoporosis and should be receiving regularly scheduled DEXA scans if you are a (or have a):
- Woman age 50+.
- Man age 65+.
- Post-menopausal woman with one or more of the risk factors below.
- Caucasian or Asian.
- Experienced early menopause or late onset of menstrual periods.
- History of bone fractures as an adult, or have a close relative with a history of adult bone fractures.
- Regular tobacco user.
- Vitamin D deficient.
- Diet low in calcium.
- Consume excessive amounts of alcohol or caffeine.
- Low body weight or a “small-boned” (slender) body build.
- Low levels of physical activity or a sedentary lifestyle.
- Taking or have taken a medication that is known to cause bone loss (such as prednisone or phenytoin).
- Low hormone levels.
- Hyperparathyroidism or Hyperthyroidism.
